Arms Care

High Carbon Steel Blades
  • Should be kept clean & lightly oiled or waxed. Mineral, Clove oil or Hanwei Sword Oil are good choices.
  • An all-purpose cleaning kit containing Khoji Clove Oil, oiling cloth, powder ball (uchiko), rice paper, hammer, and awl along with an excellent Sword Care Instruction Sheet; the Traditional Style Katana Cleaning Kit  provides all the necessities for cleaning and maintaining High Carbon Steel Blades and comes in its own wood box..
  • Avoid using water based preservatives.
  • High carbon steel blades should NEVER be stored in a leather scabbard; leather tannins are corrosive to steel.
  • Check & maintain monthly.
  • A product we recommend and use daily to keep blades clean, protected and shiny is Metal-Glo, available below.
  • For badly rusted and/or pitted blades we recommend a Rust Eraser.
  • Follow all directions and remember using an abrasive will mark the blade.
  • Old and/or Antique Blades should be checked by a local professional before attempting cleaning, restoration or repair!
Stainless Steel Blades
  • Keep clean.
  • Wipe down with a clean, dry cloth if necessary.
  • Check & maintain as needed.
  • To maintain a clean and shiny blade- use Metal-Glo.
Leather Scabbards
  • Store dry & flat.
  • An all purpose leather cleaner/conditioner can be applied if desired.
Wood Scabbards
  • Keep clean & dry.
  • Check wrappings and for warping or checking regularly.
  • Maintain & repair as needed.
  • Storing High Carbon Steel Blades in wooden scabbards is good for both blade and scabbard.
Handles, Mounts & Wraps
  • Keep clean & dry.
  • Wire wraps need regular checking to prevent raveling. Hanwei sword oil works well. Leather may need to be roughened to maintain grip.
  • Keep all fittings tight and clean.
